Gary R. Petersen

Co-Founder, EnCap Investments, LP

Mr. Petersen is co-founder of EnCap Investments L.P., an investment manager and leading provider of private equity capital to the energy industry. Since its inception in 1988, EnCap has successfully raised and managed the investments of institutional capital in twenty-five separate funds. EnCap currently manages approximately $40 billion of institutional capital.

Prior to the formation of EnCap Investments in 1988, Mr. Petersen was a Senior Vice President in the Energy Banking Group for Republic Bank Corporation in both Dallas and Houston. He served from 1970 to 1972 in the U.S. Army in Washington D.C. as a First Lieutenant in the Army Security Agency.


Mr. Petersen is a distinguished Alumni of Texas Tech University and holds B.B.A. and M.B.A. degrees in Finance. He has also done post-graduate work at American University in Washington D.C. and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University.


Mr. Petersen serves on the board of multiple EnCap portfolio companies and is a member of the board of Plains All American, Inc. (NYSE: PAA). He is on the board of the Baker Institute of Rice University, a past Chairman of Chapelwood Methodist Church, Chairman of Memorial Hermann Foundation Board and Chairman of the Council Recovery Board in Houston. Mr. Petersen is a minority owner of the NFL franchise – Houston Texans and the major league baseball team – Houston Astros.


Mr. Petersen is a member of the Board of Directors of the Houston Branch of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank and is the Chairman of the Energy Advisory Council of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank. He was recently honored at the 2020 Men of Distinction luncheon where he was the recipient of their annual award. He resides in Houston, Texas and has four children.

D. Martin Phillips

D. Martin Phillips is a Managing Partner and Co-Founder of EnCap Investments L.P. Founded in 1988, EnCap Investments is one of the oldest and largest providers of private capital to the energy industry in the United States. EnCap currently has over $50B of institutional capital under management and has raised 25 separate institutional funds since inception. Mr. Phillips serves on the board of directors of several EnCap portfolio companies and has served on the board of directors of multiple significant public energy companies over the course of his 45-year career. Prior to the formation of EnCap Investments in 1988, Mr. Phillips was a Senior Vice President in the Energy Banking Group for Republic Bank Corporation in Dallas, Houston and Denver, Colorado.

Outside of EnCap, Mr. Phillips serves on the boards of MAE Energy and The NexTen Energy Fund. Mr. Phillips’ community involvement includes serving as a board member and chair-elect of Memorial Hermann Foundation and the Emeritus Board of Small Steps Nurturing Center. Mr. Phillips previously served as the National Chairman and board member of OneGoal, a national program focused on postsecondary education advancement for “at risk” students. He also is an active member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church where he serves on the Investment and Personnel committees.

Mr. Phillips attended Louisiana State University on a football scholarship and graduated with a BBA in 1975 and earned an MBA in 1977. Today, Mr. Phillips is a board member of the LSU Foundation and the LSU E.J. Ourso College of Business. Additionally, he was elected to the LSU E.J. Ourso College of Business Hall of Distinction in 2015.

Robert L. Zorich

Co-Founder, EnCap Investments, LP

Robert L. Zorich is a Partner and Co-Founder of EnCap Investments L.P.  EnCap is the largest private equity firm in the Country solely focused on energy. It was founded 36 years ago and manages over $50 billion for approximately 350 institutions from around the world. EnCap has backed more than 275 companies since inception. Prior to EnCap, Mr. Zorich began his career as an energy banker, co-founded an oil and gas company in the 1980s, and had a two-year stint in institutional money management.

Mr. Zorich received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from UC Santa Barbara in 1971, and in 1974, he earned a Master’s degree in International Management (with Distinction) from the American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird) in Phoenix.

Currently, Mr. Zorich is an active member of the board of directors for several EnCap portfolio companies and continues to hold memberships in various industry-related organizations. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the UC Santa Barbara Foundation, the Thunderbird Global Alumni Network Advisory Council, the President’s Council of Houston Methodist Hospital, and the Council of the Duncan NRI at Texas Children’s Hospital. 

Mr. Zorich’s past community service has involved a role as Chairman of the WorkFaith Connection, Chairman of The Hope and Healing Center and Institute and a board member of Memorial Assistance Ministries organization. He is currently recognized as an emeritus board member of all three organizations.   

Honors include being inducted as a member of the Western Energy Alliance Rocky Mountain Hall of Fame, the Hart Energy Oil and Gas Investor Magazine Hall of Fame, and a recipient of Sigma Chi Fraternity’s Significant Sig award.
