When did you first realize you wanted to be an entrepreneur, and what inspired you to take that leap?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had the drive to be an entrepreneur. Coming from humble beginnings, I saw ownership as the clearest path to financial independence. The idea for Zirtue was born out of my own experiences lending money to friends and family—what started as good intentions often turned into strained relationships due to missed payments and awkward conversations.

I realized that these informal loans weren’t just acts of generosity; they were often the only alternative to predatory payday lenders, which charge exorbitant fees to those with limited financial options. Growing up in Louisiana, I lived in public housing and military communities, where payday lenders and check-cashing services were a constant presence, both in my neighborhood and around the naval bases I called home. Looking back, I saw how systematically and deliberately these predatory financial services target those with few alternatives and no access to traditional banking.

These experiences fueled my mission to create a better loan solution—one that provides access to capital for the unbanked and underbanked while preserving trust and relationships. With a finance background and a deep desire to build something meaningful, I set out to formalize relationship-based lending, promoting financial inclusion in the process. That vision ultimately became Zirtue.

Zirtue is a mobile app that allows users to lend and borrow money with friends and family. It’s a peer-to-peer lending app that helps turn informal agreements into structured loans with automatic repayments. How do you see the platform reshaping the future of lending between friends and family?

Zirtue is the world’s first relationship-based lending app, providing a modern solution for accessing funds through structured, trust-driven loans—eliminating the risks of payment defaults and predatory lenders.

Lending money to friends and family can put a strain on relationships, but Zirtue eliminates the friction with secure, accountable, and automated monthly payments. Friends and family collectively loan $184 billion annually, making them one of the largest sources of lending.

Zirtue helps unlock that $184B for the 60% of Americans living paycheck-to-paycheck, providing a smarter alternative to predatory payday lenders that charge up to 400% interest. When it comes to paying bills, people deserve better options—so they’re not forced to choose the “best bad option” every time.

Zirtue preserves trust between borrowers and lenders by introducing bil pay transparency, structure, and accountability into the repayment process. With bill-pay integration and automated payments, there’s no confusion about where the money is going and no uncomfortable conversations about getting paid back—just a simple, secure way to lend and borrow with confidence.

How has your experience in the Navy shaped your leadership style and approach to problem-solving in the business world?

At the time, I didn’t fully realize it, but serving in the Navy would become one of the most defining experiences of my life—both personally and as an entrepreneur. Looking back, I’m certain I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.

Reflecting on my time in the military, five few key lessons stand out.

1. Teamwork & Shared Success

In the Navy, “Look out for your shipmate” wasn’t just a saying—it was a mindset. We either win together or lose together, and that principle has shaped the way I lead and collaborate. Whether it’s with my team, customers, partners, investors, friends, or family, that sense of shared responsibility is deeply embedded in my values.

2. Confidence & Adaptability

Holding a Top Secret clearance and handling significant responsibilities at a young age gave me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone and trust myself. The military pushed me to think critically, adapt quickly, and forge my own path—all essential qualities in the unpredictable world of entrepreneurship.

3. Structure Meets Agility

Transitioning from the rigid structure of the military—with clear protocols and chain of command—to the uncertainty of entrepreneurship was a massive shift. But my military background allowed me to integrate structure into an unstructured world, helping me navigate complexity while maintaining clarity and direction.

4. Leadership That Drives Impact

The Navy didn’t just teach me how to lead—it showed me how to instill leadership in others. As CEO of a rapidly growing fintech company, I’ve learned that strong leadership and clear direction are essential to achieving meaningful goals. Without them, momentum is lost.

5. Resilience Under Pressure

Both the military and entrepreneurship demand the ability to stay calm under pressure, make tough decisions, and keep moving forward despite setbacks. Entrepreneurship can be taxing and lonely, but my military experiences have given me the mental resilience to push through uncertainty and find the best path forward.

The Lasting Impact

My time in the military shaped more than just my career—it shaped my approach to life. It gave me the discipline, leadership, and resilience needed to thrive in the toughest situations, and for that, I’m forever grateful.
